Best Advise

I have always wanted a PIt and bought my first one this weekend, a female. I have always had other breeds of dogs and have trained them for different working disciplines, such as Schutzhund, tracking, sheep hearding etc. I currently have 2 x Border Collie males, one cut the other not, and 1 x female toy Pom and 1 x Female maltes, who have both been cut.  I did quite extensive resarch on the Pit and visited a lot of shows and spoke to a lot of breedres and owners, about the compatability of the Pit with my other dogs. I got a number of different opinions and decided the only way was to get a Pit and do my best to socolise her and to get her used to dogs, people, sheep and cows.

I plan to spay the Pit. I believe that a lot of a dogs character is very much influenced by their upbringing and yes their makeup also plays a role. All my dogs run together and sleep in the house and I DONT want to keep my Pit locked up.

I would lke to know if there is anyone else out there that has a Pit with other breeds and their experiences or any advise that you might have.

Congratulations on the new

Congratulations on the new addition to your family! We have a female pit who is now just over two years old. We also have a Great Dane-cross (female), a Jack Russell-cross (male) and a Staffie-cross (female). We looked after my brother's pit for a long while before they moved into their house and when my brother and sister-in-law were away last December we had their two pits (a male and a female) together with our dogs for a few weeks. I am glad to say we have never, ever had any problems with aggression and all our dogs get on well with one another. They have all been socialised together since they were small, I think that's the trick. Of course, we also all spend a LOT of time with all our animals, which is essential. I believe locking your pit away will do immeasurable damage, so keep her with the others and spend a lot of time with her to see how she relates to them. I hope your new little girl settles in well.

Thanks for the response

Thank you for your feedback. I feel sooo much better, infact I bought my pup from your brother and sister in law, and when I spoke to Inez when enquiring about the pups, her info on how they got on with your dogs, made me decide to get one. Most of the people I have previously asked were breeders who had different opinions, and most of them lock up their dogs and have a number of bitches and dogs unspayed and nuted so the aggresion and hormones would be high. I am determined to make sure ALL my dogs live in harmony. I am taking my pup for puppy socialising classes this Saturday and am taking her tomorrow to introduce her to my sheep, chickens and Bull at our farm. I have joined Inez group on Facebook so you can catch up on the pups progress from there.  Regards
